Subject: Private lesmuug meeting at sletje

The subject says it all. There was a lesmuug meeting at the grounds of the (late, see http://www.literatuurgeschiedenis.nl/teksten.asp?ID=15) Graaf Floris V and it was rather private due to the fact Jaap failed to round up the usual dutch lesmuug members in time (will they ever show up?). Therefore, only he showed up to be later joined by the rest of the family. Willemien didn't really show a lot of interest yet to the wonderful world of computing; she is just discovering the world. Good for her! Lesmuugian Bart seemed to be more interested in playing instead of eating the take-out chinese food, taken in by Jeroen (who actually made some pictures of the meeting). Sonja was taking care of these junior members of the crowd while Rineke supervised. Ber gave a crash course to Jaap about drietje.

The subjects B & J looked at were:

  • What is the su passwd for drietje anyway?
  • Folding seems fun;
  • Using Amadeus & PC emulator. (Now Jaap can show the Starry Night from his powerbook instead of the Sony VAIO. Of course, we ignored the option stepping outside and just looking up).

During all this, Jaap learned lot. Also Smith got him hooked to the ramblingwafflers chat box during this process.

One thing we discovered is that there is a problem with playing a dvd copy (revolutionary OS). The official DVD Player shows way too much (random?) noise while a free one (VLC) works without any problem. It smells like a software/library problem. However, after we were playing with the PC emulation, installing Starry Night from a CD-ROM during that process, we did have to power off drietje completely to get the DVD/CD to work again. This last bit shows that there might be a hardware problem.

Conclusions (by Jaap):

  • Time to buy a real DVD and test the payer;
  • Time to look at a decent back-up method so drietje can be safely shipped for repairs.

Most important: A good time was had by all. Maybe I should rephrase that, I had a good time, and think/assume all of us had as well.
