Sorry for the previous top-post, I'm emailing from my phone ( which is  
apparently akin to drunk dialing)

You may also want to look at the command line version of apple system  
profiler.  You can get all sorts of goodies in addition to serial  
numbers.

IIRC.  /usr/sbin/AppleSystemProfiler
