thems 2 different questions of course:

1. "dd if=/dev/disk1 of=myfile.iso"  works for me. you could try
specifically defining the bs, though you shouldn't have to.

2.  resource busy would seem to be the real issue here, assuming that /disk1
works in every other respect, but locks up when you try to dd it?

did you try      "diskutil info /volumes/disk1"   ?

Just starting with the obvious.
