If it's in bad enough shape that Tekserve can't help, then the drive
most likely needs to be physically disassembled in a clean room and
the data manually read from the platters in the drive. That's a
pretty expensive process because it requires the clean room and
specialized equipment. I haven't looked in a couple of years, but
before that the best price I could find for that kind of service was
approximately constant for a few years at about $700.
I wish I could recommend a particular company to do the recovery.
I've never been able to afford to get it done when I needed it, so I
don't have any good advice about which company to use. Good luck with
it. I hope that either her drive isn't completely dead yet or if it
is, that this kind of service is cheaper these days.
